I have an Asus EEE 900 that I installed Hardy Heron 8.04 on back in the summer. It had been working great until I decided to say yes to some software updates. This has been my first Linux machine, so I'm learning!

Now I cannot access the network (either wireless or ethernet), the menus that were at the top of the screen are now mashed onto the right side, and I cannot start Jack. The only special thing I had done was to install a real-time kernal, for sound synthesis.

I figure I have two options.

1) fix the existing install. my network access is gone and I have no idea how to fix it.

or 2) reinstall eeebuntu
I have admin access on a Macintosh, but it is next to impossible to make a USB flash install drive from there. I did do it once before (for 8.04) but the same steps don't work for 8.10, or at least I'm doing something wrong.

does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I'd prefer to install 8.10, so if anyone knows how to do that with only a mac, that would be my first choice. But if anyone knows how to fix a network-less ASUS, that'll work for me too.

Have you tried running Unetbootin under Wine on the Mac?

I don't know much about Macs so forgive me if sound a bit vague. I have used Wine in the past to run Windows apps on Linux and it seems that it should be easy enough to do on a Mac. Whether or not Unetbootin works under Wine is a question I can't find an answer for...

There's a guide to installing Wine here: http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/
And you can get Unetbootin here: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Wine is only working with Intel Apple PCs. PowerPC users like me are kindly requested to look for another solution, as I have a similar (my first install) problem ;(.
I'll try to install eeebuntu on a friends macbook using bootcamp and windows, UNetbootin and an USB flash drive.
Some dealers offer an Ubuntu Distri already installed on a flash drive. Install Ubuntu via the flash drive, prepare then a bootable iso of eeebuntu for another (or the same) flash drive and reinstall eeebuntu. A bit complicated, but a different solution as far as I can see.

I'm still trying! I'm not on an intel mac so I can't run Wine. I've tried running Unetbootin from a windows machine and the resulting USB does not boot.

The ASUS does boot up, so I have been trying to use isotostick.sh which gives "You need to have syslinux installed to run this script"

The networking on the ASUS does not work after the software upgrade, so I can't just do an apt-get install. I've tried downloading syslinux and mtools packages and putting them in var/cache/apt/archives and then running apt-get, but that doesn't seem to work. I found a couple of links that told how to do that, but it doesn't work for me yet.

Does anyone know how to install syslinux and mtools without having a linux machine that works on the internet?

I guess I could try booting into my mac using a Ubuntu 6.10 live-cd and trying it that way...

I'd suggest doing the fresh install route, using Base which has a .iso which can fit on a CD. After installing Base, you just install what you want manually.

that's what I'm trying to do, but the ASUS doesn't have a CD drive, just USB and SD drives. I'm trying to figure out how to make a USB drive that boots, then I can do the reinstall.

I can't do it on my mac, as it's powerpc and so wine won't work

I tried it on windows using unetbootin, but that doesn't work for some reason. It puts it on the USB drive, but that drive won't boot the ASUS

I tried making the usb drive on my messed up ASUS, but there are too many damaged dependencies for the isotostick.sh to work. I can't fix the damaged dependencies because the network port and wireless don't work.

I also tried booting into my mac with an Ubuntu 6.10 live-CD, but it won't work on my PowerMac, for whatever reason. The live-cd worked on another mac, but I couldn't get the isotostick to work because syslinux wasn't installed, and when I tried to install it I got a message saying that it couldn't find it.

So now I've kinda run out of things to try. I might try on the 6.10 liveCD route some more...

Okay, here's what I'd do. Argue amongst yourselves on this one. Use it, ignore it, whatever.

Have you tried using Unetbootin on your current linux system?
To use it on linux, if I remember rightly, you will need p7Zip-full, mtools and syslinux. Don't hold me to that last one. But it rings a bell.

Download them from here, transfer to eee on a usb stick and install:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/p7zip-full
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/mtools
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/syslinux

You may find that it asks for other packages, but at least you'll know where to look.

Then get and run Unetbootin.

And just hope to the gods of open source software that it works.

I still feel pretty green with Linux, so simple breakthroughs are utterly amazing to me. So I'll post what has worked for me, hopefully it will help someone else (and my apologies if this seems really obvious):

I ended up fixing all the broken dependencies but using Synaptic, using the "broken" filter to figure out which .deb packages I needed to get. I had to get:

mtools_3.9.11-oubuntu1_i386.deb
sun-java6-bin_6-07-3ubuntu2_i386.deb
syslinux_3.53-1ubuntu2_i386.deb

I used my mac to download them to a USB drive, which I then brought back over to the ASUS, and then installed them using Synaptic -> File/Add Downloaded Packages. The gods of open source sprinkled their good will dust on me and everything was installed. my network access returned. The desktop is still messed up.

Right now I'm using isotostick.sh and it seems to be working as far as installing eeebuntuj-2.0-base.iso to a 1gig USB stick.
* * *
I had tried using unetbootin on linux before, but it wouldn't work, probably because of the aforementioned broken packages. I haven't tried it since the packages were fixed

One other problem I had was that the USB drive wouldn't mount. For some reason it was showing up as a cdrom. this post helped me fix that:

thanks

...and we all learned an important lesson. Possibly.

Well, done on getting stuff sorted! :D

So, what's up with your desktop? If your panel has moved to the right side, you should be able to drag it back to the top. If not, right click it and 'Allow Panel To Be Moved'.

You could always download the deb files onto a usb and transfer them across...

here for syslinux

here for mtools
