you make one of the coolest linux distros for netbooks.

I myself run eb4b1 on my Asus EeePC 4G / 701 which only has 4GB internal SSD.

What I wanted to tell with this post: Would it be possible to release updates in "steps".
Everytime when there are updates they come in a huge wave. Meaning 350+MB updates to download.

And since update-manager always crashes without further notice when I select "Partial Upgrade" there is no other way than running the full updates in one step from synaptic or the command line. This process always drives my internal SSD to its limits and I regularly get "insufficient space on hdX"-messages.

That's why I would suggest to release the updates in smaller "packages" ... Let's say 50MB of updates at once. This way the updates would not only take that much time, the traffic on the repo-servers would be spread over the time and with that the download speeds would probably increase to more sufficient speeds (right now i am downloading updates at max. 100kb/s [i have a dsl6000 line available here, so there should be enough potential]).

Am I the only one with problems like these? (I don't have many apps installed. It's just openoffice, opera and filezilla added to the base gnome system)

Apologies - the reason updates come in BIG packs like this is due to time constraints - in work i have access to a 2.5meg upload compared to 512k at home so i run updates from work on a sunday

uploading 8 gig to the repo's is a BIG job

once the next beta comes along and users start to adopt packages rather then just the team then you'll prob find that updates to apps happenen throughout the week in smaller bitesize chunks

the big updates are good new and a big step towards the next beta so we dont have meny of em left to go now anyways

Perhaps someone here knows hot to run those "Partial Upgrades" as update-manager (which btw has never worked the way it is supposed to work^^) offers them. But only without using update-manager.

The thing is .. I am afraid of breaking my installation every time those huge update chunks fill up my SSD to the brim.

Instead of using update-manager, couldn't you use synaptic package manager and deselect which packages to upgrade.

Yes of course this would be a possible option. But not a really convenient one i think.

You can deselect anything you want in update-manager, too. You're welcome to only do packs of 5-10 updates at a time...there's never going to be a "streamlined" way of doing it, though.

the update-manager will work - but u can't select the partial update option - manually tick the ones you want / dont and it works fine - being addressed
