Well, this future version looks very promising.
Also, I've got 1 more question. Will we have something booting as fast as Xandros (in Easy mode)?
We can leave that to Xandros. It was booting in 1/3 of the time that Eeebuntu Base is taking.

I've been running EB since last Dec (first NBR 2 and now NBR 3) on my 1000 SSD. I'm a long time RedHat and now Fedora user so it means little to me to say you are going to use Debian vs Ubuntu as the base for EB. If I had my druthers, I'd run Fedora on my EEE, but I would have to fiddle with it too much to get all the functions working. So what is important to me, is that I want my EEE OS to work OOTB, no fuss, no muss.

Keep up the good work and I will stay with you and help promote your netbook distro to all my friends. (I won't be using any desktop EB release... I'm expecting Fedora 12 next month!)

Thank you.

PS: I hope your 3 -> 4 revision is just a software upgrade release, poke the SW Manager button, etc. Turn. Key.

Why not base off of Linux Mint? I've used Ubuntu for 3 years (and before that, Red Hat/Fedora for 5 more), then recently transitioned to Mint, and it's a huge improvement! I guess it's just a lot more polished that Ubuntu is.

I love how fast and easy Eeebuntu is on my 1005HA netbook. If the kernel/OS issues are a problem, I guess Mint wouldn't very much solve the problem, as it is based off of Ubuntu, but otherwise, I think that it would be great.

Mainly because Mint is based on Ubuntu itself, it would sort of defeat the object and we would have to follow another distro's release pattern. Moving to Debian offers us more flexibility and we can tune EB4 from a basic start point rather than de-customise a nicely clad ubuntu distro.

And for those worrying if the SID repos will break any installations, well to put your mind at ease, we will be running our own fully populated repos and sourcing the latest apps. The apps will appear in a test repo and when proven will be moved to a general repo. This will allow users to have the latest as soon as they available (at risk of course) or wait until tested and install from the general repo.

shifting to debian is a good move.
looking forward to it - keep up the good work!

how do you plan on tackling the desktop (specifically nvidia video card drivers) version? if all goes well i'd consider switching my desktop from debian (squeeze) to eb4...

thanks for all you do :D

Just a follow up. I found a site (http://www.fedora-eee.com/) where someone listed the instructions to load Fedora 10 or 11, and provides a stripped down kernel with wireless support. Fairly painless process. I installed a generic XFCE i686 Fedora distro (re-spin) on a USB enclosure 6 gb laptop drive I had sitting around, installed the custom kernel and an eee-control port, and have Fedora running fairly painlessly on my EEE 1000. Not turn key, but pretty simple.

hi, im a first time poster, long time user, eeebuntu was the first distro i came upon for my 900, and it has been the only one i could use without frustration, saying that, i cannot wait for the next eeebuntu release.

hearing that the eeebuntu team is moving from ubuntu to debian is great news to me, finally the dev team can take control of this distro and make it truly their own, and the rolling schedules thing is also a plus, i find having to perform an update the same two days of each year a little tiresome, it feels like this new distro that the dev team is creating will be great, my only question is, what will you call it?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but at a cursory glance I can't find the answer. Is there any way to help you guys?

I love Eeebuntu and was looking forward to 4.0 (based on Karmic), but was disappointed at first that I'd have to wait a couple of months. I almost "updated" to Karmic, but then remembered that it is Ubuntu we're talking about and there seems to be not a lot of "up"dating. Then I took stock of what I got here in this wonderful Eeebuntu build: easy overclocking, great customization, EeePC Tray Icon stuff, a community of EeePC Linux (sp Ubuntu) users, etc. Then I tipped my hat to you, then took it off to you, then threw it into your ring. My hat is your hat (and it's not red...sorry...too many puns).

Anyway, is there a way for us to help, besides downloading the beta (alpha please?) and breaking things?

When EB 4.0 has been rolled out we are going to need a variety of users from the community to step up and lend a hand as if EB 4.0 is what we want it to be (fingers crossed) we wont have enough time in the day to manage it all!

keep your eyes peeled as their will be plenty of oppertunities to help out in the coming months. :)

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the work!
But I have a question ^^' I was on EB3 ... it offers me to upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 ... and I did.
What should I do now ?

Will I have to format again :s ? Sorry to ask but don't particularly want to lose all my configs. :(

Thanks all, keep on your wonderful work.

It's going to be difficult to undo the upgrade. But, if you have root and home on different partitions then you can just install EB3 to root, keep the home partition and don't format it. When you create the user during the install, use the same username as previously. This will then use the appropriate user folder on home and all your settings will still be there.

The format and partition options are under the MANUAL partition options during the install.

Other than that, you could try backing up your complete home folder and restoring when you have re-installed. Or keep the brownage you've just installed.

Steve.
