Hello
(and warning: I am an extreme GNU/linux newbie)

Just want to express my gratitude for this leebuntu (or whatever you are going to call it) having followed the forum for a couple of weeks meanwhile holding off downloading the beta. It is the zippity uppest distro so far! and this is even before the optimisation, overclocking, and array.org kernel I am about to fix into it!

Get cracking on it hackers! :D

on a side note, are you aware of firefox's fullscreen fail. :( the menu, nav, bookmarks e.t.c. toolbars don't slide away like they do under xubuntu (is it a gnome/xfce specific feature?)

looking forward to joining in this community a little

interesting, immediately after installing the the array.org jaunty eeepc kernel (2.6.28-12-netbook-eeepc), navigating around the os, typing into this forum, app loading e.t.c has suffered a hefty blow in terms of snappiness, although, glxgears reports a 400% increase in framerate performance (it appears to rotate way smoother too).

thank goodness for GRUB and the wonderful esc key

(any info on why?) my guesses are something to do with the kernels (lack of) compatibility with LXDE, perhaps because it is designed with GNOME in mind(?) yet glxgears and graphics rendering is happy because it contains specific graphics card hardware acceleration/drivers?

It's coming, believe me, I'm working on it! We haven't forgotten about lil ole LXDE, it is in the works. Work forgiving I'll have the packages ready this week and the iso ready to go on Sunday.

Sorry for the delay, I was kidnapped by the work Aliens and held to ransom but between you, me and the wee dog I think my wife was paying them to keep me out of the way. I managed to escape with a seriously scraped knee that needed at least one plaster... now, if I can just remember where I live...

Steve.

Brilliant!

I was going to ask how/why do you do it. Is it :-

a) you're paid to do it.
b) you do it on the side at work.
c) you do it in the evening in the bedroom/garden shed.
d) you're retired and it keeps you off the streets.

Your comment suggests that it might be c), is that correct?

Geoff

Do the work aliens also make you program for them?

I'm really interested in GNU/Linux hacking, but my relatively unrelated university and the life aliens drag me away from my linux studies constantly.

Also, I don't really know where to begin... there is so much to learn!!!

indeed!!! picking up a new skill is not easy...i have always found it easier to firstly learn something similar to what you can already do computing wise.....start small... its easier to learn if u don't over set a target.... also make sure its something your passionate about like your own program/ project :P

thats my 2 cents :P

yeah, that's sort of how I'm working Ii thinkI

musician into recording musician, into digital recording, into audio programming (puredata), into multimedia textual based programming (supercollider and processing), which got me into GNU/Linux, wanting a cut down super efficient custom built multimedia os for my eepc, which given extended Linux knowledge will turn into developing interesting sound and visual machines and crazy robotics on an arduino e.t.c. maybe even more :)

Actually, in my case, I am the leader that I take myself to. I run a small dev and consultancy business and fit eeebuntu in whenever I have spare minute (which usually runs into hours) and I know when I've spent too much time on it by the look I get from my wife with the "it's 3 in the morning, you're up at 6, don't you think thats enough?".... never enough, the beer timewarp effect can also be applied to working on this. Eeebuntu is funded by the company I run and we use eeebuntu at client sites so it generates income enough to pay the server bills.

Another musician eh? Seems like we eeebuntu'ers are a tuneful bunch...

Steve.

Interesting - If I am not being too forward, what kind of clients are using eeebuntu? I assume it is for the Eee PC, but I am just curious what interesting application you are enabling. I guess we eeebuntu users are pretty lucky to have the kind of support you are able to give. Whatever the answer, thanks for making my 900a such a nice machine to use.

(now if I can just get the touchpad to turn off while I type..:)

We use eeebuntu with the generic kernel (post weekend most clients are now using the generic .30 kernel) on PC's and the standard eeebuntu kernel when EEE pc's have been used.

The hardest sell I've ever had to do is getting a client to migrate to Linux but once it's in and the niggles of finding solutions to the Microsoft method of workplace computer domination have been sorted there is no looking back. Updates are pushed to an on-site repository and clients locked to that particular server. The next problem we face is getting RDP 6.1 in, this seems to be a showstopper with some clients.

Clients vary, engineering, facilities management and finance but a solution can be tailored to fit any need/business and although the initial cost is quite high compared to maintaining the status quo the total cost of ownership is lower.

Steve.

Wow. That can be a tough sell. However, I can see how after they switch they are much happier than before. Your customers experience mirrors my own with eeebuntu (probably any *buntu) as well. It just works without the windows weirdness creeping in over time. I just spent a weekend trying to get my wife's Vista machine to install updates. Somehow Vista just stopped applying them and would not let go. I had to wipe things out and start over. Moving her to Linux would be hard to do, but would sure help my support issues. :)

Anyway thanks for the reply.

don't you hate it when people are irrationally reluctant to migrate? all 7 of my housemates are computer illiterate, they all have windows (bar one who's on mac) they all complain of super buggy laggy spywared computer experience, one's computer went down due to a virus, others all take like literally 10 minutes to boot up and use is SLOW. and I tell them that all I need to do is put my magic usb key in and the speedy magic will unfold under their eyes, WITHOUT any installation or modification to their system, yet I always get a solid err i'll think about it. .
