Please Note!

This guide is no longer current for Eeebuntu 2.0 (Intrepid Eeebex 8.10). Specifically the kernel is installed for you by default. We are working on a new guide for installation of Eeebuntu 2.0.

Thats right. We now have an idiots guide to installing eeebuntu!!

This guide will literally hold your hand through the entire install.

Want to install eeebuntu but don't have the guts? This guide has screenshots of the entire process.

What to expect;
    Download links
    How to format USB
    Compiling liveUSB
Setting us the BIOS for boot
    Installing eeebuntu
    Setting up the partitions
    Running first time
    Installing the custom kernel (array.org)
    Setting up the correct repositories
    Enjoy!

So simply download the pdf and get installing!!!

Download Link: Click Here

Any feedback, suggestions or ideas on the next section of our new guide for dummies.

Possible further guides: How to setup all function buttons + extra 4 on 901series+.

I am logged in as root and I run the following command..
Code:
./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso dev/sdc1

Which only gives me...
./isotostick.sh [--reset-mbr] [--noverify] <isopath> <usbstick device>

also you could try

sudo sh ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1

this forces the script command to run so try this one[/b]

also i noticed that u missed the / from "dev/sdc1"

try the command u had done but add the / but if this doesn't work try the above command

Thanks so much for the guide.

I have some follow up questions.

When I installed the custom kernel I used the '*' rather than actual version numbers. It seemed to work - but maybe not?

Could that be why I am having issues with my webcam?

Also - where do I begin to look to get my system to look like the images included in the end of the install guide? - very cool!

For my Eee PC 1000 what SHOULD be working and not working after this install?

- webcam
- microphone
- function keys
- wireless
- blue tooth
- other?

Are there any other scripts/fixes I should be looking to perform?

Are there any known wireless connection issues (I seem to be having troubles connecting to my WAP that uses WPA-PKS encryption

hmmm sounds like you didnt install the custom kernel correctly....

id try redoing that step again- dont worry you woont lose anything ive redone it like 7 times just to test the scripts etc.

depending on the model of eee you have you shoulg get

webcam, bluetooth, wireless, NIC, sou nd and function keys (apart from the extra 4 on some models).

only things known not the work but for some they do is mic and 4x extra keys ok?

To get your system lookin as i have ive enabled advanced desktop effects; compiz fusion.

go to system, preferences, advanced desktop settings. in here you can change the desktop to cube. but beware does take some performance.

Also my backgrounds are custom photo shopped mixes of the default mac os background with the hardy heron.

Hi I am having trouble with the creation of this Installation USB, for my asus eee 901 linux. I have placed both the iso and the script isotostick.sh within my home directory.

The commands that I have entered were:
sudo ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1

Which resulted in sudo: ./isotostick.sh: command not found

I have also tried this command:
sudo sh ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1

Which resulted in: Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
You need to have syslinux installed to run this script

So I figured that I would install syslinux: sudo apt-get install syslinux
Which resulted in:
Setting up syslinux (2:3.53-1ubuntu2) ...
trev@PC:~$ sudo ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1
sudo: ./isotostick.sh: command not found
Trying again:
trev@PC:~$ sudo sh ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
trap: 197: SIGINT: bad trap

Any suggestions as to where I have stuffed up would be greatly appreciated!

at trev; The signet bad trap error is it not verifying the transfer to a different file format.

What did you format your usb to be? fat or ext?

is your usb definately detected as /dev/sdc1?
also ensure your usb is bootable with the flag option in gparted.

At spac; juust tested its still working......odd try again ok?

Hi Guitaraholic,

I had formatted my usb to ext2 as per the instructions.
I even tried using a different usb key and had the same results. I don't know if this is relevant, but I had to unmount the drive before I could partition it? I had also changed the flags to boot.
I have had some positive results after reading this post: http://www.eeebuntu.org/forum/viewtopic ... 3856c79868

So after using: sudo bash ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_nbr_1.0.iso /dev/sdc1 I now have a live USB.
Thanks for your help, hopefully I will not have any further issues.

After installing, I still wasn't able to utilize the usb. I did a little bit more research and found http://www.eeebuntu.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=133

I had previously formatted my usb to ext2, I tried formatting as fat32 and although I got a huge amount of errors during the installation phase. i.e.
cp: failed to preserve ownership for `/media/usbdev.kv7035/README.diskdefines': Operation not permitted
cp: failed to preserve ownership for `/media/usbdev.kv7035/md5sum.txt': Operation not permitted
cp: failed to preserve ownership for `/media/usbdev.kv7035/.disk/casper-uuid-generic': Operation not permitted................etc
Use of this usb key performed it's installation flawlessly? Go figure!
Anyway, I just thought that I would let you know that I now have eeebuntu installed. Thanks for your help!

Dont worry about those error files; i had them appear on a 1 in 10 chance.

Was going to recommend you used the bash command depending on your reply.

The files which dont copy are readme's owned by root so don't always copy unless you run as gksudo gparted.

lots can go wrong using root so i dont advise new users to do so.

I got an error while creating the LIVE-USB-Stick:

christian@linux-m9zk:~/Desktop/Speicherort> sudo ./isotostick.sh ./eeebuntu_standard_1.0.iso /dev/sdb1
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
cat: /usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
Copying live image to USB stick
Installing boot loader
extlinux: Not a directory: /media/usbdev.4pCScm/syslinux
USB stick set up as live image!

The cat-problem can be fixed while create the folder syslinux and copy the data to this folder. But this: extlinux: Not a directory: /media/usbdev.4pCScm/syslinux
i can`t fix and the stick doesn`t work in my 1000h. It says: Missing operation system.

Can you help me?

Sorry for my bad english
