I wanted to jump in and say I tried this on my EEE 1000 and had some mixed results.
I turned up to 120% alsa_output.pci_8086_27db_sound_card_0_playback_0 and rebooted. The startup sound was horrible and crackly. If I had gone any higher it could have wrecked the speakers.
So I turned that back down and set alsa_output.pci_8086_27db_sound_card_0_playback_0.monitor up to 120% and it works great.
I noticed that as an Ubuntu default, the "front" playback value is around 80%, which limits the high volume output setting when "ti" is set for 100%. If you go into the Volume Control panel, and adjust the front to 100%, you will gain about 20% more volume with the regular volume control.
Thank you. This sound fix worked a treat on my eeepc 900. Also appreciated other poster's warning of possible overload. If you do this keep the changes modest and incremental. Work up, not down. The built in speakers are dinky.
