I meant to post in this thread:
The two links listed in Step 4 do not seem to work from the PDF. I've downloaded the PDF a few times and opened with all four of my viewers, but the links do not point to anything. Does anybody know the links offhand?

i used unetbootin to get the the eeebuntu iso as bootable from a usb stick, and then followed the instructions on the pdf guide to install eeebunti 8.04 on my eee 900hd, but i'm having a couple problems i followed the links posted in the post above to try to install the custom and files, but still can't get the wifi to work (it doesn't see any networks)
also some of the fn keys show the old style icon, some show new, and some show both. does anyone have any pointers?

eeePC model: 1000H
Aurora version: Standard 3.0
What encryption are you using to connect to the wifi AP, if any? Can you see any wireless links at all?

cod i hadn't run the eee support scripts, all working now.
scottishgeek, i think that links pdfs don't work in some older pdf readers, there are links in a post 3 or 4 posts up, those are what the pdf directs to.

After a number of the same starts and stops as other users here, I wrangled the iso onto the key (as ext2, flagged boot, checked multiple times in gparted).
And I followed the pdf's instructions in Bios, and the eeepc701 booted into xandros (full desktop) like usual. So I retraced my steps, and tried many more times.
Undeterred, I thought I'd try a workaround, and instead of F2ing during the splash, tried ESC instead, to manually choose the boot drive. Boots straight into xandros from the internal sd.
I've tried every USB port on the machine at this point, and now 2 keydrives.

This "idiots guide" does not seem to be much help now to us "idiots". As a new user trying to install eeebuntu to an eeePC 4G, this thread seems to have multiple dead links, references to a previous Ubuntu release and be generally out of date and not much help to an unfamiliar user. Any chance of an up to date current rewrite of guide to really help us "idiots" ?? It would encourage use by us ex Win users, instead of creating total frustration ! thanks and regards

Suggestion (if it hasn't already been suggested!).....
Publish a 'How-To' guide for each specific eee PC and other netbook which EEEbuntu now supports. We shouldn't need to 'suck it and see' - there could be instructions for each model.
I'm currently running Ubuntu-eee 8.04.1 on an eee PC 901, and almost (but not quite) everything works pretty well. I'd be keen to try the latest eeebuntu but surely someone can say exactly what I need to do to get everything working on the 901 without me having to experiment.

I had Ubuntu-eee 8.04.1 running on my 901 before, and now I have installed eeebuntu 2.0 nbr. Comparing both installations there are plus and minus points. In eeebuntu you have UMTS devices configured by network manager, also the VPN connection. Wifi works including toggling in both installations, bluetooth works including phone manager for my Motorola V3i. Camera on/off works but without OSD. The function of the second user key I have not found out so far.
I have to admit that I had run all scripts from eee-config right after installation without any check before what is already running and what needs fixing.
To make it short: I would not like to go back to ubuntu eee

OK. First of all, without wanting to bore you all, my eeePC 1000 just came from Santa - and I was real pleased with it until I started using the Xandros OS, at which point, having at least heard about Ubuntu, figured there might be a version or two available for an eeePC - and hey, I arrived here!! . My next 'problem' was I've never used a Linux OS in my life - I've established I'm a 'noob' then . Thankfully, I came across the Idiots Guide here - fabulous. Downloaded iso and unetbootin to my windows pc and created the 'usb drive' on a 2GB SD card. Followed the instructions in the guide to try out eeeBuntu on my eeePC - why did I worry - this is great - as others have said you guys at eeeBuntu have done a fab job - this OS looks amazing. At this point (and possibly contrary to the advise in the Guide) I clicked the Install icon and off it went. I notice a couple of differences to what's in the guide after this point though...
1. In Part 3 "Install eeeBuntu" it talks about being offered a choice for how you wanna partition the drives - it only offered me the option of using the whole drive for eeeBuntu configured in ext3. I had to say 'yes'. Q1: is this ok? Still, it got to the end of this process and fired up - no problem. I even got a WiFi connection straight away - took as long as typing in the security key to get online.
2. Now for the bit I don't yet understand... Part 4: Installing the custom kernel. As below, I spotted the links to Downloads 1 and 2 don't work:

[edit] I did find the files over at this link http://www.array.org/ubuntu/setup-hardy-alt.html at array.org.
Having followed the link above, I notice there's an adjacent page on this site entitled "Intrepid" which seems more appropriate here. Q2: have I got that right? Q3: I just follow the instructions using a terminal window and type it all in and the jobs done - right?
Great to be onboard - looking forward to being around the forum.
