This did work on my 1005HA, but after the update I found that my wireless signal strength dropped to almost nothing here at school, and even went from around 90% to 25% at home, even after rebuilding drivers.
Reverted back to .29-netbook, and wireless is back to normal (Still sucks at school)

I don't know what to think of this solution. I have a 1000HE. It's a great little machine. I love it. When I first got it, I put Eeebuntu 2 NBR on it. I couldn't get all of the hot keys working though. I am new to linux and am not a geek. So playing around to figure out the settings can be frustrating.

When EB3 came out I installed the Base. I went through all of your steps on this guide since there were many hotkey bugs. Wifi worked out of the box.

After following this guide completely, everything worked perfectly except wifi. It wouldn't work. The applet showed that I was connected to my Asus WL-530g router. It had a strong signal. I could ping it but, not other pc's or network printer connected to it. Before this, I could ping everything connected to the router. There also, is no internet whereas before the changed from this guide Internet was good.

Then somehow, I don't know how it happened, the 1000HE was upgraded to 9.10. Perhaps I pushed a button with my eyes closed. I spent many long late night trying to get this problem fixed. So then I went for a clean install and followed this guide implicitly.

The problem I'm faced with now is 1) the same wifi problem, 2) when I press the touchpad hotkey there is interference from the "lock screen" feature with the "touchpad" feature. The touchpad works great but I get locked out of the screen at the same time. 3) when I switch to 1024X 768 screen resolution using the eepc-tray controls the desktop is completely scrambled. The vertical/horizontal sink is all messed up. In fact it looks like there are several desktops all bunched-up behind the vertical/horizonal lines. The login screen is O.K. only the desktop has problem at this point.

At this point, the only way I have been able to recover was to connect the 1000HE to an external monitor. With the help of another computer runing ubuntu on it. I used the following procedure to recover the screen.
1) right clk on Application and choose edit menu.
2) clk preferences and right clk Display.
3) choose Properties
This gave me the command for to run the display application. Remember, I can't see the desktop on the 1000HE.
Next: on the 1000HE with the external monitor connected to it I did the following.
1) Reboot the 1000HE so the external monitor will be detected. then
2) Alt/F2
3) Type in the command for to run the display application (the command is on the other computer screen)
4) Sometimes the display application open on the secondary monitor. If not, the drag it over from the primary monitor to where you can see it on the secondary monitor.
5) 1st tick the "Mirror screens' box
6) then set the primary screen resolution to 800X600 "Apply" (1024X600 won't work)
7) Great the screen is back.
Now I could set the screen to whatever resolution I want except 1024X768.

If I use the hot key to change the resolution to 1024X768 my cursor disappears. I then have to reboot to get it back. I am using:
1) netbook-dkms_0.5c_all.deb
2) eeepc-acpi-utilities_1.1.48_i386.deb
3) eeepc-tray_1.0.17_i386.deb
These are the same debs I had on the 1000HE the first time I installed eb3 base before it upgraded to 9.10.

How can I fix these problems?

One other item I forgot to mention is that before the upgrade when I pressed Fn + F7 to turn off the screen it worked perfect. However, after following the instructions in your guide the screen does not turn off on my 1000HE.

I hope you have the solution for this problem as well as the others mentioned in my last post.

Thanks in advance for your help.

@jrdb - I first tried the video patch instructions found here, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 . It did not work and it corrupted my desktop. It would hang and wouldn't finish loading. After hours of tinkering in recovery mode and worrying I would have to reload the OS again, I discovered I could get the desktop to load by booting into an older kernel from grub. When I followed the directions to revert back and performed sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg there was once permanent change to my xorg.conf that was not there originally. Under section "Device" it added Option "UseFBDev" "true". As far as I know that's the only remnant but now my flash video performance is much better.

Considering how poorly my first attempt went, I'm hesitant to even try this guide and upgrade the kernel. Hopefully when EB4 is out we will be able to just upgrade rather that start from scratch and all of this will be history.

Everything else works except, as you pointed out, Fn-F7 and the dedicated hot key do not blank the screen. Not a biggie in my book.

One other anomaly is the mouse pointer and cursor. I like the White Glass effect. If I leave System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects in normal mode and try to change the pointer style or size, the only place it has any effect is when Firefox is in focus. Everywhere else it's the old pointer and size. If I switch to Visual Effects/None first, then change pointer style or size, then it sticks and applies everywhere, even if I switch back to Visual Effects/Normal.

Now if Adobe would just get their act together and fix the GD video and audio access bug they introduced with their Flash plug-in v10, life would be grand.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I jumped in both feet and tried this guide complete with kernel upgrade. Did not crash and burn the way my first attempt did but it also regressed the video performance greatly. I reverted back to where I was before and Flash video is smoking again!

My end result is in xorg.conf under section "Device" it added Option "UseFBDev" "true". Pasting the complete file below. I am leaving the three added tmpfs entries to fstab for now. We'll see how that goes.

It was also a PITA to adjust my touchpad properties by having to edit xorg.conf all the time. I much prefer being able to edit directly in mouse properties.

So, for me the guide presented here is a bust. EeePC 1000H, 1GB RAM, EB3.

This is your problem.

There are some threads on this board that speak to the problems of allowing a behind-the-scenes upgrade to 9.10. I also believe the developers instituted a fix that prevented *most* installations from upgrading to 9.10. Apparently your rig upgraded anyway.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you. I still run 9.04 (EB3). Check the dates at the outset of the guide... it's been a long while since the main content of it has been updated. All of the guide and such pertains to an underlying 9.04 NOT 9.10.

You might consider jumping to EB4 soon. The team will have a lot less dependency on external software sources come EB4. This should mean less corrective guides like this one.

First I should stress that I am completely new to linux. I bought a eepc1005-hab which came with winXP. I downloaded and installed Eeebuntu 3.0 standard on a dedicated partition last week and proceded to this guide to get my wireless working and graphics upgraded.

I made it through step one of this guide(kernal), then rebooted and happily discovered I now had network access! Then I went on to the next steps, step 2 and step 3.

I think I got through number 8 of step 3 and rebooted. When I booted up in the new kernal I logged and got a black screen showing only my cursor. I rebooted in safe mode and got the same thing. I then tried rebooting in my old kernal which worked fine, but I still get nothing if I boot up in the new one. The old one gives me no internet the new one gives me no graphics. I have a 1005, so I know this guide will work for me and that I did something wrong, but I don't know what I did or how to correct it. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to fix it? Do I have to wipe the partition and install from scratch again? I have a total of about 2-days experience in linux so any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I thought I should make my question more clear. Can I boot in my old kernal and somehow fix or remove the new one so I can start the process over? I tried following the removal instructions from the second post, but they didn't work? I know this is probably a newby question. Sorry I have no linux experience...

thanks in advance for your help

Hi Nathan!

Well, since you did not install everything per the guide and since you "sort of" removed some stuff, I'm not sure how to get bearings on your situation.

You mentioned you were up for re-installing EB3 in an earlier post. I think that this is a good idea. If you do it, use a wired Ethernet connection and grab all the updates (and reboot) before you attempt the guide.

Greetings, and thanks for the wonderful distro!

I followed instructions at pendrivelinux.com, and can boot from my 8gb SD card. No wifi/ethernet as it's still std3.0, which I grok. I'm working through the howto at the top of this thread. Had trouble typing in the debs for wget at the command line, but was able to get them via firefox, put them on a usb stick, copy them to the 1005hab, and run the sudo dpkg command. Reboot. No grub, so no way to select the new kernel.

To get booted from the SD card I dug into the bios and disabled boot booster, and I hold down the esc key when I turn on the power, which lets me boot from the SD.

I'll keep digging in this item, but will also be grateful for any pointers that come my way.

i followed the steps and the xorg.conf file caused my video to be corrupted, i had to get rid of the xorg file and use the old, and everything works fine except my screen keeps freezing at random, this was probably the worst thing i have tried to improve, a total bust for me.

EDIT: i reconfigured my xorg file, i omitted most of the configurations posted here with the exception of the "section "device"" part and the "default depth 24" part, it turns out that something in all the other configurations described was messing up my system, i am not going to find out exactly what parts of the proposed xorg file were causing the errors, but i know that the part under "section monitor" was one of the things causing the errors.

this did improve my video performance, but it also added the random crashes described, so i am pretty sure that this was not worth it, now i will try to figure out what is causing these crashes to occur.

... not sure what to say. Do you have a question?

My 1000HA has been running smoothly with all the steps in place for close to six months...

Well where should I see the most improvement? I have a fresh install of Standard and have a 1000HA as well and performed all of your steps to the T. As far as I can tell I have no improvement in performance (in fact a degradation since I have lost the tray tool functionality and can no longer change my clock speed) especially in regards to flash performance. Now I understand that flash is a horrible beasty but I have not been able to match the performance I had under Windows 7/Vista/XP. Any suggestions? This is the 5th or 6th Linux distro I have tried on my netbook.
