eeePC model: 900A
Aurora version: Base 3.0
900A with 1gig ram, 4gig ssd, Atom processor. No webcam or Bluetooth.
Fresh 3.0 Base install + updates breaks wireless and sound.
Followed guide including bios upgrade to 1102 and ram disk. Wireless fixed (I don't have to enable wlan in bios on boot anymore). Flash stream video works, installed flash by downloading .deb installer from adobe (just clicking links in Firefox). Screen rotation and touchpad rotation works.
Note: Video and sound did not work until I installed VLC and did full shutdown and boot. I'm assuming that VLC installs or fixes a library or something.
Still have mic issues, but not a priority.
Thanks for the guide siege. And, once working, this is a excellent dist. for the eee. [EDIT: Corrected typo.]

Thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure the 900A is listed as a successful model.

[SOLVED]
Hi,
after successfully fixing a problem with graphics after standby following the instructions in http://forum.eeebuntu.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4047&p=19019#p19019 (worked), I tried to get a better graphics performance following your guide - first of all great guide!! - but sadly it didn't work on my machine.
I have to manually switch to kernel 2.6.28-15 on bootup to get to a visible screen after boot. Otherwise I am getting the scrambled video display that was also happening after unsuccessful return from standby.
Beside kernel 2.6.30-02063004 I have also 2.6.29-1 on my machine - which both produce the same scrambled video results.
Did anyone maybe encounter a similar behaviour?
I am running a eeebuntu 3.0 standard on an eeePC 901 with 2GB of RAM.
Many thanks for any hint!
Cheers,
Christian

This guide worked fantastically today on my 1005HA!
Note: I had to rebuild the atl1e drivers again on the new kernel to get my wired ethernet back (ie: AR81Family-linux-v1.0.0.10.tar.gz + patching IRQ_HANDLED/etc. + install).
Original Motivation: I followed this guide to upgrade since I was experiencing a strange wpa_supplicant issue with not being able to connect to unsecured networks. Here is a link to some info on what might be a bug, in case others are scratching their heads trying to connect at coffee shops while wifi at home works fine. http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc ... bug/404433 I don't know if it was the hpet/pcie boot options or just newer kernel that solved this for me, but amhappy to have public wireless up and going again!
Thanks! -Tim
Just updated my 1005HA and it's working perfectly.

What if I'm trying the new LXDE 3.0 Beta 2? (i.e., no Gnome except for gdm) Will these instructions really not work for me? I've been looking them over and I can't identify what parts are Gnome-specific.
I'm hoping they are not far from something I can use.

I've never tried them on LXDE; I'd be interested to hear how they fare. I believe that the eeepc-tray only appears in the Gnome panel... meaning you'd need to use the utilities from the CLI.
If you try the guide on an LXDE install and meet with complete success, please post back here and I'll update the OP to reflect your good news.
If you try the guide on an LXDE install and meet with issues, please post in the LXDE portion of the forums as I'd like to keep this thread "in line" with the OP (i.e.: Gnome etc).

It would be interesting if someone could explain why and under what circumstances BUS_MODE="SHE" is necessary.
Basically, this is the system that interacts with your hardware to adjust voltages, fan speeds, what have you, on the main board. Unfortunately, it's a windows system that Fewt has adapted/ported/whatever to a linux compatible version. I dunno what the exact differences are between Auto and SHE, but I think Auto tries to do some other diagnostic stuff that ends up failing somewhere. Thus just running the SHE engine allows it to only control those parameters, which is sufficient for everyday use. It cause some other types of problems, though, which is why he didn't set it as default.

I did need to
Code:
sudo apt-get install eeepc-tray
and it didn't bring along any dependencies, but, agreed, I have no way of actually putting it in the lxpanel. There is some discussion of that here.

A success so far, except I have not done the last ramdisk step. I'm realizing now that I wish I had done that from the start, as I now have a separate partition for /tmp alone...
For LXDE users, the instructions work, if you apt-get eeepc-tray and replace all the 'gedit' with 'leafpad'.
Some caveats and general feedback: - I copied your xorg.conf file and pasted it over my own, but I did not have a closing line feed at the end of the file; if the file ends immediately at the last "EndSection" without a final line feed, you get ugly video errors at startup and it sends you to low-res mode. You may want to pad that code block with a blank line at the end, or maybe a comment line, to make sure people get it right. - I too found the trackpad wayyy too fast at first, and I have a 1000. But, as you say, I know how to edit those settings. - The volume controls seem to lag a LOT. If I hold Fn+F12 it takes a while to catch up, and the volume keeps going up after I let go (which led to me quickly pulling the headphones out of my ears.) This may be a problem, but at least they work now. EDIT: - I also moved step 4 to step 2 so that I would actually have wifi enabled between reboots..
So yes, a success, but the ramdisk thing makes me feel like starting all over again.

Hello, colleagues!
Has anyone tried to make this work with new 2.6.31 kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31)? I tried but failed: text mode only, no X and a lot of BINARY (!!!) garbage in /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log...
Kernel 2.6.30.5 works PERFECTLY (siege, thanks a lot!!!).

Overall good news! I'm glad to hear it!

Thanks for writing your guide. It was a lot of help. But I ran into trouble when i updated the kernel because the ALSA driver, snd-hda-intel, conflicted with my version of pulseaudio and libpulse0 which were version 0.9.17 from Karmic. The result was that ALSA made no sound but beep. OSS worked.
Just so nobody else tears their hair out, (like me) could you add that to the issues list?

Started off with LXDEb2 and started this procedure... let's just say I have abandoned eeebuntu in favour of xubuntu 9.04 with Adam's kernel.
I installed to a USB stick (a full install not the live CD thing) instead of a hard drive because I didn't have a partition available for the exercise. Previous eeebuntu tries were on the HDD.
Some way through the procedure (at about 2nd boot) the display stopped displaying and no amount of ctrl+alt+bksp or ctrl+alt+del or rebooting brought back anything at all. I'm a linux neophyte so decided to go with something that works substantially instead of partially. As reported elsewhere, the external monitor didn't really work, the Fn button that is supposed to control it didn't work, wifi never worked etc etc. Even without Adam's kernel Xubuntu out of the box seems more functional. Based on my experience eeebuntu with LXDE is not 'beta' not even 'alpha'.
I guess that was my last try, I have basically tried all eee flavours by now. Am I missing something or is working Fn keys not worth all this?

The LXDE version isn't released, it's going to have bugs. The standard, base, and NBR versions are stable and 100% support the HE once the fixes in this thread are applied.
