Part of your problem could be from the "missing" eeepc-tray. My Flash video only works well when in higher performance modes. If you're stuck in Power Saver and cannot switch to a faster mode, your Flash would likely be crummy.

I recommend purging and reinstalling the applet.

followup to my previous posts:

i reinstalled eeebuntu and redid the guide, this time it went without a hitch, no random crashes or eeebuntu getting an xorg error screen, but i have to say that this guide has drastically worsened my video quality, now i cant even watch hd vids on firefox anymore, previously it would do it flawlessly.

Well it isn't missing, it's just malfunctioning. I am doing a fresh install of 3.0 Base at the moment. Following installation I will perform an update and then follow your guide again. Results to follow.

worked well on my 1005 except that I manually downloaded the linux headers and image since the laptop doesn't have the necessary net connection and installed the atheros drivers. Thank you so much

Glad it worked for you. Such nutty workaround guides should not be needed at all in EB4. The guide is almost obsolete!!! I cannot wait.

I'm saying this as a 701 owner with problems to fix - I don't want to make matters worse.

I don't have a 701 so I cannot offer specifics for you.

However, the problem with video in EB3 stems from the fact that EB3 is based off of Ubuntu 9.04. And Ubuntu 9.04 had a ton of xorg issues with on-board Intel graphics chips (like those found on almost all EeePCs). Therefore a workaround was needed to remedy/bandaid the problem.

EB4 will not be hampered with any of that. The public beta is getting closer and closer! I really hope it solves your 701 video probs. For reference, give your rig what it needs to succeed when trying it out... put it in high performance mode and stop unnecessary programs.
