For those who have used the Remote Desktop settings in the past for others to access your machine or to access you machine from another whilst in another room, you may notice that under Preferences, there is no Remote Desktop icon. Follow these steps (command line actions are in italics)
Step #1: sudo apt-get install vino
Once you open up Remote Desktop, you may also notice a few advanced features are no longer there:
A checkbox to enable the use of an alternative Display port (other than 0), and
A text box to enter the four digit (59xx) value for the port you prefer to use
So, choose your changes/settings as presented, at least, and close the Remote Desktop GUI. Then ...
Step #2: sudo apt-get install gconf-editor (may be already installed)
Step #3: gconf-editor Proceed to desktop -> gnome -> remote_access
1. Place a check in the box for: use_alternative_port 2. Change the port to the value of your liking by double-clicking on alternative_port and changing the last two digits to any number between 01 and 99 . . . (use two digit notation) (example: 5908)
Close the Gnome Configuration Editor and re-try your VNC connection to the port you prefer (e.g.: jaunty:08)
Let me know if you have any edits to offer to this post and I'll clean it up.
