I'm curious, what alternative or small profile programs are people installing on their LXDE systems? For example, are you using Abiword/Gnumeric instead of OpenOffice?

sudo apt-get install nautilus
gedit
gdebi-gtk
gcalctool
gconf-editor
Firestarter
Evolution
OpenOffice
gThumb, or Gwenview + KIPI plugins
SMPlayer
gnome-sound-recorder (should be installed w/ nautilus. o/w syn > gnome-media)
gnome-alsamixer
Skype
GParted (normal) (Gnome Partition Editor)
Adblock Plus (Firefox add-on)
ConvertAll
Revelation
Tomboy

ONLY IF NEEDED:
Fontmatrix, XSane, scribus, stellarium, OpenOffice Database

NOTES:
despite Nautilus, keep PCMan File Manager. But Nautilus has more features such as easy connect to a network, ...
Fontmatrix is very handy, specially if you work on documents created on Windows.
SMPlayer can read lots of multimedia formats. Therefore, you don't need heavy applications or several programs such as Amarok...

I like LXDE because you can keep it light & clean!

LXDE will also appeal to users who are dissatisfied with KDE 4 and Gnome. Remastersys has a very nice LXDE distro which includes an excellent LXDE Control Panel.Unlike KDE and GNOME,LXDE isn't a monolithic blob of all kinds of things that you start running when you log in.The provision of iceweasel, and whether or not oss is available, and the other applications that you mentioned,is a design choice that the distro made. The network tool can be an added application, wicd and Network Manager are two that are mentioned favorably and we have lxnm that is alpha state right now.

What's the point of running lxde if you're going to install all of those gnome apps? Might as well just run gnome and openbox.

- try gigolo (along with pcman fm) as an alternative to nautilus , it will mount just about anything (network shares included).
