well, but basically, one of my questions is answered: this is a technical hiccup, not an intentional one, and this version is actually out, albeit with problems.

Saturday August 1st, the same issue continues. Here is the message that we get when trying to download:

hay guys,
ive emailed the guys at virgin yesterday morning.... its odd....
their mirror rsyncs from ourselves and pulls all the iso's over... just to test it was syncing i changed the iso file name and some code in the index page..... strangly they index and the link changed but the lxde iso isnt populating on their server...
odd indeed!

I have downloaded b1 last month to try it: are you interested in me putting up a backup link to make it available while the mirror issue is being fixed?
EDIT: the upload should be up by Noon (UTC/GMT/Zulu)

guitaraholic, another idea: could it actually be that your ISO file is defect? and that this is the reason why virginmedia does not 'take' it?
reason why i am thinking this: found a friend who downloaed it through a torrent connection, worked. but the resulting ISO file is corrupt, cannot be burned bootable, and if forced to do so overriding all warnings, does not boot.
If you were to move the index.html file out of the way and let Apache provide a directory listing, would you/we be able to see the file and download it?

its not even that..... vm are rsyncing against a filestructure but for some reason the LXDE was but is no longer on their mirror.... even chaning location of the iso, the index.html the file name isnt copying it across to their server... its odd indeed cos every other iso is ok on their end......
Im still waiting for an email back from them for the time being...more than likely beta 2 will be done before they get back to me

I notice that the LXDE web site itself is unreachable and has been since at least 1st August. It appears that this is caused by a DNS problem and apparently Andrew Lee is working on it.
I downloaded and installed from here via USB stick and had no issues with the install.
However, I cannot find a way to add any new programs, update the OS, or even the Firefox browser. It isn't in any of the menus.
I may be a fairly linux newb here but what am I missing? I love how snappy this is on my 2G Surf and I don't want to go back to Xandros.
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade
