Started off with LXDEb2 and started the driver upgrade procedure... let's just say I have abandoned eeebuntu in favour of xubuntu 9.04 with Adam's kernel.

I installed to a USB stick (a full install not the live CD thing) instead of a hard drive because I didn't have a partition available for the exercise. Previous eeebuntu tries were on the HDD.

Some way through the procedure (at about 2nd boot) the display stopped displaying and no amount of ctrl+alt+bksp or ctrl+alt+del or rebooting brought back anything at all. I'm a linux neophyte so decided to go with something that works substantially instead of partially. As reported elsewhere, the external monitor didn't really work, the Fn button that is supposed to control it didn't work, wifi never worked etc etc. Even without Adam's kernel Xubuntu out of the box seems more functional. Based on my experience eeebuntu with LXDE is not 'beta' not even 'alpha'. The final straw was trying out Parted Magic and experiencing how well everything works out of the box. That's what I want in my Linux not the pre-alpha LXDE lame horse. I don't mean to sound harsh here... I guess this stuff is not for noobs...?

I guess that was my last try, I have basically tried all eee flavours by now. Am I missing something or is working Fn keys not worth all this?

I must say it sounds as though you been through a hard go around with eee flavors.
I will say that these forums and flavors are free of cost and the only thing the user has to do is be able to put in some time to search, read, and feel free to ask questions if necessary.

The eeebuntu forum is one of the forums I choose due to the vast amount of knowledge and expertise.

Now to your issue, I have both a 900A and 1000HE. I found that EEEBUNTU 3.0 Standard worked well for me. I tried LXDE and was able to get it to work - though there were a few bugs; however, this is expected when using 'beta' software. As you pointed out, beta is not for prime-time noobs (those who want a fully functional system to use).

If you tried eeebuntu 3.0 standard or base and do not have all the functional keys working:

Which ones are not working?
Did you post the questions to the right forum (Eeebuntu 3.0 Base, Standard, ACPI, etc)?
Are you willing to experiment and edit files to see your final results.

For instance: my mouse on my 1000HE was not working correctly, until I applied a pre-configured xorg.conf files posted here.

I got my function keys working by going here.

If none of these solve your problem try first looking here.

If all else fail, debugging your problem and posting your results will help us, help you.

Just some friendly advice from your friendly neighborhood.... wait.....

Just some friendly advice.... :D

thanks for that! :)

I am replying this off eeebuntu Base... Xubuntu has done for the 3rd time what causes me to abandon it... it trashed the video output.

I have gone through the backporting exercise successfully and it is a lot better than before... but the install with just a few extras (Chromium browser, VLC player, Thunderbird and nothing more) and the upgrades later the install is sitting at well over 2GB?? Not very slim. (Which is why LXDE attracts me but the driver backport doesn't seem to work.) But at least it is a lot better than what I had before, but still quite some ways short of the nice crisp fast WinXP (WinFLP actually) which is still my primary OS choice. Puppylinux is nice too but I need to install it properly.

I'll try again. Regarding the question about what Fn key didn't work, that was the one switching monitors. Also, wifi didn't work

What's the story with Firefox 3.5 in Beta 2?

I couldn't uninstall it in Synaptic -- I had to search and destroy all references, files and folders, and uninstall xulrunner. Then I installed 3.0 from the repository.

I had to do this because when I installed a single extension from mozilla it would crash on boot. Why isn't it installed properly?

At the time of the initial build there were no debs for FF3.5 and during this build the only debs were from the PPA's, using these would have dragged in half the world of gnome which would have defeated the point of LXDE so FF3.5 was built from source. To remove simply delete the folder (from memory this is /usr/share/firefox). You will need to do this as root.

I did do that, and installed 3.0.14 from repos.

Have you tested your build with any extensions? Mine crashed immediately, and would crash instantly on relaunch.

Swiftfox 3.5, however, worked fine. You might look at that.

Also, my function keys don't work properly either. 1000H.

The keys will need to be configured in the acpi utils script. The applet for the control of ACPI is gnome only (it's a gnome panel app) but the scripts controlling the acpi are still there in the background. Have a wander over to the acpi utils forum and you'll find your way to configuring those keys.

Steve.
