As people with netbooks are likely to be moving around and connecting
to various, possibly dubious, networks, having a firewall running may
be a good idea. I think that ufw is installed but not running. The method
which I have discovered for turning it on is to install gufw, and then
use it to turn ufw on. If you want to do something a little bit cleverer
then the GUI is quite nice, but simply turning it on is very useful :D
Would it be worth install gufw or is there a better way...

I am not too sure, but installing gufw would probably pull in a bunch of GNOME dependencies, so you might be better off learning how to command line do it.

Yes, something has pulled in some Gnome stuff.
I wasn't sure whether it was gufw or synaptic.
Gufw is not normally running, it is only required when
making changes. Would any Gnome stuff get fired up
at boot time or does it only start when an application
requires it?

To simply turn on the firewall, the terminal command "sudo ufw enable" seems to work well enough and it sets it up to run at system startup.

Thank you, that is just the sort of info I was after!

How can I get past my university's network firewall to make a p2p program work? I'm trying to get a p2p file sharing program and nothing is working. I've tried Morpheus, Bearshare, Blubster, and others but after they search and find a file none of the programs will actually connect to a user and download it. Limewire won't even connect! I've been troubleshooting (adding exceptions to my firewall, opening ports, etc.) and I've come to the conclusion that the network at my university (I have high speed internet in my dorm in college) probably blocks my ability to transfer files in a p2p program. Is there anything I can do to get past this or any other program that could make it work?

no
unless you use a proxy, but the universities block that stuff for a reason.

How can I start my Firestarter firewall in my Ubuntu Linux computer? When I try to start it, I get a message "Failed to start the firewall.. The device eth0 is not ready... Please check your network device settings and make sure your internet connection is active." My internet is hooked up. Pls help.

Are you connected through a cable or wireless?
Sounds like unless you edit some Firestarter config somewhere, you have to connect to the internet through a cable.
ifconfig eth0
