OK, at the risk of breaking etiquette by replying to my own post, but in the hope that this may be useful to users and developers....
The issue now solved, at least on my 901. I reverted to the original xorg.conf, which uses hal to set the input devices.
lshal and xinput list revealed hal was detecting the touchpad OK and installing the synaptics driver so I figured all that was need was to enable SHMConfig.
I modiified the /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi file listed in fewt's wiki as follows:
I haven't tried it yet, but am I right in thinking the other options listed in fewt's xorg.conf could also be added to this file to set them through hal? See here and here in the Ubuntu documentation.

Hello
I also modiified the /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi file per fewt's wiki but cannot disable the touchpad. The tray messages are good - "enabled/disabled". xorg.conf configgured per wiki as well. Please advise what to check. Thanks!
