How do I enable a button to disable on/off (toggle) the touchpad on an asus eee 1000
The first silver button is configured for this. There are instructions on the Wiki for configuring additional buttons. Right click the tray icon, and select Help.

Interesting. I just updated the kernel and I also removed the CONFIGURATION file and its now changed the behaviour of the first button. Now it says "unable to enable the touchpad" which I guess is progress. Having read the threads xorg, conf I am still not understanding it because I dont know what model of touchpad I have, but I know I like the gestures!
The 1000 has the i945GME, this loads i915. Does the i915 driver encompass the 945GME?
I ask because I see a lot of this on boot: [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6
EDIT: PS: "DisplaySize 195 113" in xorg.conf. This will work for 8.9" screens, I have a 1000 so my screen is 10.1" and measures 221 x 129 (rough measurement with a cheap plastic ruler)

My first silver button controls the touchpad (after doing the xorg.conf thing AND installing gsynaptics because in a different thread someone told me to after just doing the xorg.conf didn't work) as well as shuts off the screen. What can I do to stop it from shutting off the screen?

I uninstalled gysnaptics and can still control the touchpad with the first silver button but it also still locks the screen. How did you stop that from happening?

My 1a and 1b buttons do 2 functions as well, would this have to do with deleting conflicting ACPI scripts as shown here? I'm not sure what to delete & what to leave, can someone clarify? EDIT: I'll install dkms, Q still stands though
Also wanted to ask about eee-tray; it still references /etc/default for configuration. If eeepc-acpi.local is present in /etc/acpi, shouldn't it read (and open for edit) that one instead?
(ps: thanks for your help, fewt.. I'm using my old xorg.conf from when it went bonkers; fixing eee-tray and clearing out seemed to help)
EDIT:

sudo apt-get install eeepc-laptop-dkms
then reboot.
I'll do this when I get back to the Eee (it's at work )

cheers!
Yes, it's possible it is also trapping 1b. I stopped trapping 1a in the source for that module by commenting the code out. If it is still trapping 1b, then let me know. Also let me know what both functions are so I can be sure I'm making the proper edit.
