so I was reorganizing my panel and accidently removed this very nice and helpful feature. I can not seem to get it back. please help.

SOLVED: my own stupidity, I was looking for an icon named "EeePC-Tray" or similar, turns out it's the notifier applet, with this on top of it. All is right in the world... for now

If it's just not running, you can start it by going to Applications -> System Tools. If you deleted it from the menu, you can create a new menu item which runs '/usr/bin/eeepc-tray.exe'. I don't know where the icon is stored, though.

@ tycho:

Thank you, I did try those, and I get a little computer icon but it doesn't do anything.

seems silly to re-install the OS just to get this applet back, but I REALLY like it, and I want it back. I was trying to remove an item next to it, right clicked, then remove from panel, and it was gone, I thought SH***, wrong applet deleted... tried to add it to applet and I can't get it to work. Anyone have any thoughts?

You shouldn't need to reinstall. Did you try creating a brand new menu item for it? If you did and it didn't work, can you describe the issue (including any error messages)?

Also - it should automatically start when you log in. Have you tried logging out and logging back in?

I have tried the turn off and on again method. I will try again at the new menu item, it's not that there is an error message, it just doesn't function. hard to explain. I'll try to do it again at lunch (in a few) and take some screen shots. Any other thoughts are appreciated but for now I'll try that.

Tried to add it as a menu item and that does not work either.

I am unsure if this is a related issue, but I built the panel menu thing that is described here http://eeebuntu.org/wiki/index.php/Gdock and everytime I restart it's pinned to the top instead of the bottom. when I go to properties and toggle it to bottom it doesn't take. I even tried going into gconf and changing it to bottom and it just really wants to be on top.

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

As long as you haven't deleted your notification area, open Preferences -> Sessions and make sure that EeePC Tray and EeePC Restore are checked.

If that doesn't work, run this:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall eeepc-tray
