I have a small VGA monitor. Can I use it with my 1000HE with extended desktop. I don't mean cloning. The external VGA and laptop monitor will monitor the left and right of the screen.

I've heard people have success with it both ways. I think the key is to position the second monitor in a certain position in relation to the first monitor. Sorry, I never use the external monitor bit, but I know the answers are on this forum.

Absolutely possible, with 2 caveats:
grandr has issues properly positioning the monitor. If you can't get it to not clone, use xrandr, that always works.
You may not be able to set the resolution to full size on the external monitor. This has to do with the maximum supported X resolution. If you span, you're creating a huge virtual desktop, and the max is 2048x2048. So you may have to settle for lower resolution, or use a virtual desktop in your xorg.conf (which breaks other things).

BobGod8, could you explain more? I tried to install xrandr however aptitude says xrandr in not available any more and suggests to install x11-xserver-utils. I installed it but I don't know how to use.
By the way, I do not concern the positions of monitors. I want two different desktops on each monitor or a desktop divided by two like in windows.

Having never used x11-xserver-utils, I have no idea how to use it. Try typing xrandr into a terminal and see if something runs. I'm hoping xrandr is contained as part of the utils. If not, type sudo apt-get install xrandr
This should install xrandr. Then you'd want to xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS
That would give you two screens side by side. Split desktop, like Windows.
grandr is a gui for xrandr. It's good at turning the monitor on, and changing resolution, but not much else
