Hi, I'm not really a new Linux user, but I just got an EeePC 1000HX and dumped Eeebuntu NBR 2.0 on. Very very impressed. Putting Linux on a powerful desktop is daunting for a Windows person, and having to do it on a netbook with a small screen, small keys, and a weaker processor is even more challenging. However, I was able to install it on my first try from an SD card, of all things.
Anyway, my actual problem is as the title says. Previously, my Fn-keys were working pretty well, almost exactly the way I wanted them to. Specifically, Fn-F9 (System Monitor).
I was playing around with Eeeconfig, and the board said to install Eeecontrol, which was better. I know those aren't the exact names, but I'll use them for readability's sake. Eeecontrol wiped out Fn-F7-9, so then Fn-F9 no longer opened System Monitor. Then, I saw a post saying that there was an updated Eeeconfig, which I installed. That uninstalled Eeecontrol, which was the expected behaviour. However, even after running the appropriate Eeeconfig script, I don't have Fn-F9 opening System Monitor. Also, apparently the new Eeeconfig is supposed to support the EeePC 1000HD, but the selection is "EePC 1000HD" [sic], and the scripts are blank. Finally, the new Eeeconfig is supposed to install Eeecontrol, but I never saw that happen either. I would like to use Eeeconfig as opposed to Eeecontrol, because I don't like how Eeecontrol doesn't give you an "open System Monitor" option for its hotkey definitions.
Once updated, re-run the eee-configure again and install the eee-control program again. This should cure your function key problems.

The last time I used the repositories, they were down, I guess. I now see "eeeconfigure", and "eeepc-config". Should I uninstall "eeepc-config" before installing "eeeconfigure"? I'm assuming eeeconfigure is the correct program, since there is also an eeeconfiguredb package.

Yes, the eeeconfigure , with db is the correct tool.

I have the same issue. 2 days ago, I brought home a shiny new Eee PC 1000HE with a 160GB disk. Yesterday, I wiped all partitions but the small XP recovery one (keeping my options open in case I ever wish to reinstall XP - fat chance Microsoft!), and I then installed Eeebuntu NBR 2.0. Today, I fixed the Wifi issue (thanks to 'fukr's post from 2 weeks ago on ubuntuforums.org), and now I'd like to get the Fn key shortcuts working.
Only problem is, the 1000HE model isn't listed in EeeConfigure, so which one is safe to use? If none, can anyone tell me how to setup the Fn key mappings manually? I know my way around Linux so I can follow shellscript and config file related instructions, but even so Eeebuntu's new to me.
Btw, my specific Fn key issues are (a) Fn-F10 to mute sound only works while F10 is pressed down, and reverts back to un-muted as soon as I release F10. (b) Fn-F3 through to Fn-F9 don't appear to do anything. Perhaps they were never mapped? Idk, only just installed Eeebuntu
Fn-F11 and Fn-F12 to adjust volume work fine. Fn-F2 to toggle wireless on/off doesn't appear to do anything. Fn-F1 to suspend also works.
Thanks - Victor E.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated . I played around with eeeconfigure, eeecontrol, and eee-acpi-utilities some more, and it was frustrating
Eventually, I uninstalled both eeeconfigure and eeecontrol, then reinstalled eee-acpi-utilities and rebooted. After the reboot, I found that the following shortcut keys worked (I enabled show keys in eee-acpi-utilities to help me check these):
So now at least I can minimise power usage by turning Wifi, bluetooth, and/or webcam off when not needed, so I'm getting there
What still doesn't work: Fn-F3 through to Fn-F6 do nothing (although the ACPI utilities does show the notify-send window stating the keycode). Fn-F10 still only mutes volume while I have the F10 key pressed down. Instant key #1 doesn't work - I get the error message "Unable to enable touchpad. Ensure xorg.conf is properly configured".
This whole touchpad issue is just confusing - I've seen so many posts regarding it. I've tried various fixes, but none work. Basically, what I can't do is get SHMConfig to be enabled, so when I run something like "synclient -l" I get the error "Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?". I can't run GSynaptics (via the icon in Preferences) either, as a similar SHMConfig error appears.
Have to go now, as I got a minor power spike due to weather.
Cheers - Victor E.

Back to square one
I installed "eee-control" as you suggested, and now the only function key combinations that do anything are Fn-F1 (suspend), Fn-F11 (vol down) and Fn-F12 (vol up). Even after I completely removed eee-control, only those 3 keys worked. The silly thing is, I can run the scripts in /etc/acpi/eeepc, and they not only work, but I get the notification windows also, as I've uncommented the KEY_SHOW option in /etc/default/eeepc-acpi. So why have most of the function keys that used to work suddenly stopped working?
Also, when I installed eee-control (via "sudo apt-get install eee-control" on the command-line), I get an error message stating that my PC is not supported - is there any reason for this? Do I need a BIOS upgrade or something? And if I dare to upgrade the BIOS, what will that break? (Sorry, not taking it out on anyone, just frustrated with the hotkey problems).

Thanks for the help, all those who posted suggestions
OK, not quite solved - the Fn+F2 combination to toggle touchpad still refuses to work, as I have yet to solve the SHMConfig issue (reported in various other posts). I'll keep looking into it.

I completely take back what I just said
I tried the 2 fixes from the following post: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2331 These were (a) add "options psmouse elantech=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/options, and (b) add the following text to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
(I just added these to the end of the existing lines).
Now the touchpad is enabled/disabled via instant key #1, and the setting is restored during startup (I verified this by leaving SHOW_KEYS on). Don't know why I didn't get it to work before - I guess I just hadn't tried this exact combinatiion.
Btw, this didn't require me to install gsynaptics and/or gsynaptics-elantech - I only had to modify those 2 files and then reboot.
Regards - Victor E.
