Hi, maybe your gnome-power-manager has the "can hibernate" flag turned off. open gconf-editor on a terminal. search for gnome-power-manager. look through the subfolders for the "can hibernate" key and enable it.

That worked a treat for me - hibernation seems fine. If it is that easy - the obvious next question is why was it disabled - I couldnt think of a system where it was more required than the eee pc.
For those not wanting to wade to find it - the option in gconf-editor is under apps/gnome-power-manager/general and is named "can_hibernate".
I flipped it to true, and sucessfully hibernated and resumed.
