I had a mail from Vereva with this usb tip:

Quote:
in order to reduce energy consumption can be done button, switch on\off the usb:
#on
sudo modprobe ehci-hcd
sudo modprobe uhci-hcd
#off
sudo rmmod ehci-hcd
sudo rmmod uhci-hcd

Switching off USB can save a lot of energy when it isn't really needed.

Vereva goes on to say:

Quote:
while loading it, I switched off (use rc.local)
and added applet to the panel (to do so, I created scripts on\off, allow them to run in sudoers (truth is not safe))

As always, feedback appreciated.

Steve.

It's probably worth pointing out that your SD Card slot is on the USB hub, so switching off USB will also unmount your card and all contained therein.

Also the built in webcam will not function with USB off.

Also another way of saving quite a bit of power is hitting F2 on startinup and disabling the extra in the BIOS like

webcam
bluetooth
wireless
etc

does save quite a bit!

Perhaps you could use the program powertop? It gives nice directions to save power and also show you which items cost how much power.

Excuse me but as I'm a complete idiot with Linux, how do I exactly make that script and get it to work?

Miniman, if you still want this script I'll send a modified version. Let me know.

I'd like to get that script as a icon on desktop if that's possible. Can anyone tell how much does it affect the power usage?

I would also really like to use that script but doesn't know how to do. The ideal would be to be able to run it by pressing one of the special keys of the eee

Hi,
Is there any similar scripts to INCREASE WRITEBACK TIME ?

I saw once a guy and he was able using the comand line of:
- Disable VGA port (I think he used rmmod)
- Disable sound ports when not in use
- Disable USB /ETHERNET/BT/ WEBCAM

The purpose of that was to lower the power comsumtion to the minimun. He was using powertop to check that out.
Unfortunately I have o way to contact that person. I would apreciate if you can guide me on how to do this or where can I find information about it in order to try it in my eeepc.

Thanks

The kernel is adjusted automatically when you go to battery power to increase writeback time, and to put your audio into low power mode. There is no USB disable, it didn't really work well. For BT and Webcam there are options in the tray icon to disable those in Eeebuntu 3.

Hope this helps.
